INTERSECTION DESIGN STUDIES

Olympian Drive, Champaign County

Prepared six Intersection Design Studies for the following locations: Mattis Avenue and Olympian Drive, Prospect Avenue and Olympian Drive, Neil Street and Olympian Drive, Lincoln Avenue and Olympian Drive, U.S. 45 and Olympian Drive, Market Street and Olympian Drive. Study included traffic signal recommendations for the proposed improvement. Worked with IDOT officials to prepare projected traffic volumes and turning movements at each intersection and traffic volumes throughout the corridor. Performed extensive alignment analysis. Attended public hearings regarding the improvement. S&A did all of the drainage analysis and storm water detention design for this project.

Prospect/Kirby Intersection Improvements, Champaign

This project improved the Prospect-Kirby intersection by constructing left turn lanes on Prospect Avenue, left turn lanes on Kirby, and adding left turn arrows for all approaches. The project was approximately 1,250 feet long on Kirby and 650 feet long on Prospect to accommodate land width transitions. The existing pavement structure was evaluated. The existing pavements were constructed in at least two phases, and as a result had different ages and structural integrity. The design for the new pavement system provided uniform durability across the length and width of the intersection improvement. Engineering design work on this project included topographic surveys, preparing base maps, roadway design, drainage design, right of way plats, legal descriptions, and temporary construction easement drawings. The design work included preparation of special provisions, construction schedule and cost estimates. Construction inspection and pay estimate preparation were also a part of this project.

Kraft-Mattis Avenue Truck Entrance, Champaign

This was a four-phase project developing and implementing a new truck entrance for the Kraft General Foods plant located in Champaign, Illinois.

Phases I and II: Preliminary design work (designed entrance roadway and parking areas); preliminary sketch to IDOT and City of Champaign for review of Mattis Avenue intersection; performed design survey of roadway and parking areas along Mattis Avenue and within plant site; drainage plan (prepared analysis, calculations, and preliminary design); prepared typical cross sections and roadway plans showing both bituminous and concrete shoulders and addressing staging operations.

Phases III and IV: Final design work for entrance roadway, grading and drainage, paving, traffic signals, fencing, seeding and parking areas; new entrance and traffic signals at Mattis Avenue (submitted plan to IDOT and City of Champaign for review of Mattis Avenue intersection; obtained permit from IDOT and City of Champaign for new entrance); final construction plans and specifications; bidding documents; guard house design; scales (provided foundation design for two platform truck scales and showed locations on site plan); street lighting and parking lot lighting (design included street lighting system, pole foundations, control system, poles, fixtures and wiring); signs and signage (traffic control, directional, and instructional signs); railroad crossing (designed modular rail crossings and secured permits); right-of-way dedication plat for new Mattis Avenue entrance; project management; project administration; construction staking and layout; field observation of construction work; preparation of pay estimates; prepared "as-built" plans.

Lon Drive and US 136 Traffic Signals, Rantoul

S&A completed the Intersection Design Study for this intersection, one leg of which serves a major shopping center. The system is traffic actuated from the side streets. In addition, the system contains an emergency vehicle priority system. S&A studied and then made a consideration of upgraded streetlights as needed by the use of combination poles.
