BIKEPATHS AND PEDESTRIAN PATHWAYS

Bicycle/Pedestrian Pathway, Lake of the Woods, Mahomet

This pathway consists of a 4.2-mile path that meets all AASHTO Bicycle Guidelines. The Champaign County Forest Preserve District was awarded a federal grant for 80% of the project's cost. The primary objectives of this project was to provide a safe route for residents north and east of the park to commute via bicycle to Mahomet; provide an opportunity for recreational bicycling in the park; reintroduce the public to the natural environment of the Sangamon River; provide expanded opportunities for historical and environmental education programs and field trips for area schools.

Bicycle Pathway, Savoy

This improvement provides a direct connection between the growing residential areas of Savoy to the extensive bikeway system of Champaign-Urbana. The bike path provides a safe means for bicyclists to travel from the residential areas of Savoy to the public recreation areas of both Savoy and Champaign as well as to the campus of the University of Illinois. Prior to the construction of the bike path, there were only isolated sections of sidewalk along Prospect Avenue (the major roadway along this corridor) and no useable shoulder width for bicycle traffic. S&A was selected to survey, design, and prepare contract documents for the project. The pathway has a bituminous hot mix surface (sand mix) over a bituminous base. It is 1.9 miles in length extending from Graham Drive in Savoy to Windsor Road in Champaign. It meets all American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Bicycle Guidelines. Three permanent easements and one temporary construction easement were required for construction of the project. S&A prepared all easement documents including plats and legal descriptions. The first 0.8 miles of pathway were constructed on the unopened portion of Prospect Avenue right-of-way that lies immediately west of newly constructed residential developments in Savoy. The design of this portion was prepared in concert with the existing conditions as well as with the future roadway development of Prospect Avenue. The remaining 1.1 miles of pathway lies in a highly urbanized area with well-established subdivisions and mature landscaping.

South Lincoln Avenue and Windsor Roads, Urbana

South Lincoln Avenue will be a new four-lane pavement from Windsor Road north to Hazelwood Drive. The pavement will have a curb and gutter along the east side and a paved shoulder and bikeway along the west side. New streetlights will be installed along the street and the traffic signals at the Windsor Road intersection will be modified. New turning lanes will be added. Length of affected roadway is 2,600 feet. This job will be completed in the summer of 2000.
